CAUSTIC SODA is sodium hydroxide, NaOH.
Molecular weigh 40.07, H 2.52% , Na 57.48, O 40.00% .
Application
CAUSTIC SODA is a highly alkaline compound
used to control the PH in water base muds. It will further assist in the
solubility of deflocculant, e.g lignosulfonate and chrome lignite. Addition of
CAUSTIC SODA increases the hydration rate of clays. High PH is an aid to
controlling corososion and combat H2S gas.
Recommended treatment
CAUSTIC SODA should ba added to the mud as
an aqueous solution. Dissolve the CAUSTIC SODA i a chemical barrel and add
slowly over a complete circulation. The amount of CAUSTIC SODA erequired is
dependent o several factors, such as the PH of the mud, type and concentration
of additives in the mud system and type of formations drilled.
